FLASH

The new FLASH User Facility (Bird's eye view) providing FEL radiation from the VUV to the soft X-ray range. User experiments started in August 2005.

FLASH, a Free Electron Laser that provides tunable radiation from the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) to soft X-rays is built at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) at DESY. In TTF Phase 1, where FEL operation ended in March 2002, the SASE (self amplified spontaneous emission) principle has been proven for wavelengths from 180 nm to 80 nm. For TTF Phase 2 the linear accelerator was extended to an energy of 1 GeV what will finally allow to reach wavelengths down to about 6 nm in the first harmonic of FLASH. The intense, short-pulsed FEL radiation, is available for users since August 2005, presently at wavelengths around 45 and 30 nm.
