With the availability of the first FEL for the VUV to soft X-ray spectral domain it will become possible for the first time to use SASE FELs for scientific user experiments in the wavelength domain of 6-60 nm and beyond. This facility will not only open the door to new science, it will further provide the testbed for future facilities aiming for even shorter wavelength.
The course summarises information about sources for VUV to soft X-ray high brilliance radiation. Specific properties of FEL radiation and important aspects of experiments using FEL sources based on the SASE scheme, photon beam diagnostics and instrumentation will be reviewed. Scientific applications from a wide range of fields that have been proposed for the VUV-FEL will be discussed.
